Aquaculture Europe 2020 in Cork, Ireland

The theme of this conference is “The Blue and the Green”, where a traditional green economy in Ireland rubs shoulders with an ever expanding blue one. The EAS Conference will provide a knowledge exchange platform to explore the synergies made possible by sharing a productive coastal catchment.  This conference will bring together stakeholders from many diverse disciplines to discuss and debate cross cutting issues such as new circular economies, life-long health and environmentally sustainable production.

There will be a Session titled Shellfish Restoration and Conservation at the upcoming Aquaculture Europe 2020 in Cork, Ireland (Sept 29th-Oct 2nd).

“Shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels) have seen a decline in population numbers providing incentive for restoration and conversation efforts. Now, with multiple restoration projects in full swing, it seems an appropriate time to question whether we are implementing best management practices. Shellfish restoration requires a good understanding of the ecosystem to develop a self-sustaining population. Biosecurity regulations and legal restrictions, in place to provide environmental security and public health protection, can hinder progress. Concerns about disease causing agents such as Bonamia ostreae have resulted in restrictions to movement of infected stock. However, there is mounting evidence that shellfish, exposed to disease, can develop resistance, and using ‘disease resistant’ shellfish as broodstock could provide a solution for long term restoration. The technology used to support shellfish restoration is rapidly advancing, providing a higher level of success. In this session we will discuss how we can use our advancing knowledge and experience in restoration and conservation to help inform best practices. Using good science and progressive policies we can move towards successfully restored self-sustaining shellfish populations.”

This session will bring discussion sharing experience, cutting edge technology and advice to future restoration and conservation efforts for all shellfish bivalves.
