Harbour Oysters
STATUS: ONGOING
The Harbour Oysters programme utilises existing marine infrastructure to install large scale installations of native oysters in ports and harbours. Started in Emsworth – a town with a deep oyster heritage – by two local sisters, the programme initially expanded throughout Chichester Harbour and is now working with sites and partners throughout the Solent and south coast.Installing on existing jetties and quays, focuses efforts on some of the most environmentally impacted areas of the region, and provides access to, and support from, coastal communities to deliver a proactive solution to our degraded marine ecosystems.
The targeted approach to water filtration addresses local concerns around water quality while providing large-scale broodstock nurseries to support the restoration of regional wild stocks and wider ecosystem rehabilitation.
Harbour Oysters aims to drive accountability for, and investment in, local marine environments to promote a more sustainable future for coastal communities.
